Today we stopped in to check out action in the high school division of the opening day of the RameyBasketball Fall League. The action was hot and heavy with many of the top players in St. Louis participating. Here are a few notables that stood out.
Ryan Torrey 2019 Soldan HS- The senior guard had his shot going in this outing. Torrey’s low-key style initially led his defender to believe that they could take plays off. However, it didn’t take for the opposing coach to assign a player to face guard Ryan. Torrey led his team with 13pts, including three (3) three-point field goals.
Donovan Clay 2019 Alton HS- Clay is simply fun to watch. I’m pretty sure that there’s not a stat column that he wouldn’t appear in. The senior Alton forward has an endless motor, rebounds on both ends and outside his area, is unrepentant in his use of fouls, and runs the floor with intent to harm the rim. Clay scored 13pts.
Courtland Soll 2019 St. Louis Christian Academy- Another fun one to watch. I could easily shorten my post game summary of Soll by saying the little fella can hoop. It would be an accurate statement, but where’s the fun in that since Courtland is blessed with such a nice collection of offensive skills? Soll presented a clear and present danger to the defense every second that he was on the floor. Courtland put an incredible amount of pressure on the defense, by attacking off the bounce, pulling up from outside the arc, as well as some midrange action. The kid is the real deal.
Jordan Nesbitt 2021 St. Louis Christian Academy- Nesbitt was firing on all cylinders today. Jordan is an athletic forward whose physical build could easily make one assume that he is an upper classman. In fact, his ability to bully defenders to the basket served him well when guarded by older players. Nesbitt also shot the ball well from the perimeter in this game. Nesbitt is one of the top are prospects in his class. Jordan finished with 18pts.
Kobe Clark 2020 Vashon HS- Kobe Clark was a lean mean scoring machine. Clark showed the ability to step up and make key plays. The 6’6 Jr swingman was not afraid to put it on the floor, and he also showed off a nice perimeter shot. His long arms and athleticism allowed him to wind his way around and over opponents. Clark had 16pts.
Schuyler Pimentel 2020 Riverview Gardens HS- Pimentel is a Las Vegas transplant that introduced himself to the St. Louis hoops scene via a 27pt performance. Schulyer had a pedestrian first half which I’m sure was his desire to get comfortable with his teammates and the new setting. However, after scoring four first half points, Pimentel exploded for 23 second half points. The wiry guard is athletic, shifts gears well, and does a great job navigating the angles to gain an advantage on defenders to the basket. Schuyler finished with 27pts.
Nick Kern 2021 Vashon HS- Watching Kern today, I couldn’t help thinking about how much this little fella has improved over the past year. The 6’5 sophomore is now one of the best area players in his class. Kern has obviously gained strength and improved on his ball handling and finish moves. Kern comes from good stock and it was on full display today. Kern is athletic and is at his best in transition and attacking the rim. Kern scored 23pts.
Malek Davis 2019 Cardinal Ritter College Prep- Malek Davis is a speedy lead guard whose nose to the ball gritty defense allowed his team to dine on transition baskets triggered by turnovers. Davis shares the ball well with his teammates but can also put it in the basket himself. Davis scored on a combination of layups, three-pointers, floaters and elbow pull ups. Davis finished with 19pts.
